A Master's View

Hi everyone; In this edition I would like to give a big WELCOME to all our new white belt members.

Firstly,……. Welcome to our art and I am confident that you will enjoy your journey with Shim Jang Taekwondo.

From your very first lesson, you are a white belt in Shim Jang taekwondo, you have now started your journey and have a really exciting time ahead….. Congratulations !

NERVES……Try not to be nervous, the majority of new members experience a feeling of inadequacy with regard to performing the moves required during training and this is quite normal, If you feel this way, try not to worry, the feeling is very common and short lived.

I can remember the time when I first entered the Dojang to begin training with Shim Jang Taekwondo, the Grandmaster was yelling out instructions and I thought "what am I doing here ?... I am surrounded by amazing martial artists and I will never be able to do this".
Well…..here I am 20 years later, yelling out my own instructions and helping my students to be the best they can be. It is something very special and I still enjoy myself each and every time I put on my Dobok !

It is important to remember (and understand) that you are a beginner and all other members were beginners like yourself at some stage, If you follow your instructors advice you will soon learn, techniques will become easier and self-confidence will grow.
On the other hand, if you expect too much too soon, you will disappoint yourself because learning anything new takes time, especially when you are training your body to do new things.
We can only digest/retain a certain amount during each class so, my advice is to set yourself the goal of taking just one special thing away from each lesson, as the lessons increase so will your understanding and ability.

SPORT or ART ? …… As Shim Jang Taekwondo is not a sport, we teach our students to deliver all techniques correctly using full speed, full power, split second timing and most importantly, full control. This system of teaching decreases the chance of injury from uncontrolled blows and allows students to study the art without fear of constant injuries during class. This is what makes our style of Tae Kwon Do suitable for men, women and children. Our classes offer a comfortable environment suitable for each person to learn at their own pace so be sure to take advantage of this and train regularly.

The classes are designed to provide you with all the tools essential to becoming an accomplished martial artist. Initially your training will concentrate on basic techniques, fitness and flexibility. Then as you progress, it will begin to incorporate advanced techniques, specific patterns of movement, self defence manoeuvres and free sparring techniques. These are all the physical aspects of the art.   In time you will also learn the mental aspects of self discipline, confidence, focus and determination.  All these skills, from the most basic to the more difficult, are achieved at a gradual rate individual to each student.

With some sweat and patience I am confident that you will gain many life skills from the art of Shim Jang Taekwondo. (This is now your art as well as mine).
