Greetings all; ……Hope your training is going well.

In this edition I would like to reflect on the 5 tenets of our art ……
Respect
Honesty
Discipline
Courtesy
Integrity

Respect: "Respect yourself and others will respect you." - Confucius
We must always be aware of what we do and say and how it will affect others. When we can control our actions and words, we will know a satisfaction of having contributed our best whether it be by outward expression or silence at the right time.
This is basically being humble and considerate; if we practice this we will earn the respect of others and gain self respect within.

Honesty: "Honesty is the best policy". - Old proverb
To be honest you must be fair and truthful. It implies a refusal to lie, steal or deceive. If you are known to have honesty others will give you their trust.

"Discipline: Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment." - Jim Rohn
In our context, we are referring more to self discipline which means to bring yourself to a state of order and obedience by training and control.
There are many important qualities that can contribute to a person’s achievements and happiness, but there is only one that begets sustainable, long-term success in all aspects of life and that is self discipline. It is the trait needed to accomplish goals, lead a healthy lifestyle, and ultimately, be happy.

According to a recent study, people with high self discipline are happier than those without. The study discovered the self disciplined subjects were more capable of dealing with goal conflicts. These people spent less time debating whether to indulge in behaviours detrimental to their health, and were able to make positive decisions more easily. The self disciplined did not allow their choices to be dictated by impulses or feelings. Instead, they made informed, rational decisions on a daily basis without feeling overly stressed or upset.

Courtesy: "Courtesy costs nothing, but buys everything." - Hazrat A.S
This is showing politeness in your attitude and behaviour toward others. It shows you have respect for others.
Courtesy is basically using good manners.

Integrity: "Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching." - C. S. Lewis
This implies trustworthiness and incorruptibility to a degree that one is incapable of being false to a trust, responsibility, or pledge. To have integrity you must adhere to moral and ethical principles and it is regarded by many as the honesty and truthfulness or accuracy of one's actions.
As you can see these traits are quite interwoven. One leads to another and will tend to supplement each other.

In learning the art of Shim Jang Tae Kwon Do and training with spirit it is hoped that we will improve these traits and in turn improve our life.
