Nick’s Master Class

Greetings all; While setting up and promoting “The Dojang” (and becoming a grandfather for the first time), I found myself pondering over the reasons people (especially children) joined a martial art like Shim Jang Taekwondo ?

These are my thoughts on why we should enroll our children (and ourselves) in Shim Jang Tae Kwon Do….

In a culture that seems to glorify violence in everything from music to video games and television shows, the idea of enrolling your child in martial arts classes might, on the surface, seem strange. While martial arts-centered action films seem to be filled to the brim with violent behavior and gory injuries, people are surprised to learn that Shim Jang training is actually very beneficial to people of all ages for varying reasons.

Like so many other things that Hollywood doesn’t always get right, martial arts isn’t quite the brutal pastime that it seems.

Here are 10 reasons why I think Shim Jang Taekwondo training is good for adults and, especially, our children……

1. Fostering Self-Discipline –   One of the central tenets of Shim Jang is an absolute focus on self-discipline. Children with a Shim Jang TKD background, however, are continually reminded of how essential self-discipline is.

2. Boosting Social Skills –   A child that doesn’t always thrive in a highly social environment and may find it easier to get to know people and make new friends when they’re in a room filled with peers who share a common interest. The children on the playground may not always have “common ground”, but devotees of Shim Jang are able to get to know one another through shared pursuits.
Partner-driven forms like 1 step sparing can also foster camaraderie, as they encourage children to pair off and build their skills together.

3. Encouraging Physical Activity – Limiting screen time is a great idea when it comes to getting kids off the couch and encouraging them to be more active, but it only goes so far and can sometimes be seen as a “punishment”. Enrolling a child in a physically demanding pastime not only discourages the sedentary lifestyle they may have become used to, but it also gets them learning and gives them an enjoyable activity that inspires them to keep active.

4. Learning to Set and Achieve Goals – Shim Jang TKD is based around an accomplishment system of coloured belts that signify the wearer’s degree of skill. When a child strives toward each new belt they are learning valuable lessons about setting and reaching his goals.

5. Increased Self-Esteem – Confidence comes with achievement, so a child’s self-esteem level will get a boost with every new move they master and every belt they earn. Children that may struggle with a low sense of self-worth usually become more confident and assertive while they’re enrolled in one of our Shim Jang martial arts class.

6. Instilling a Sense of Respect – Learning any martial arts style will require the child to show the instructor unflinching respect. Today’s child culture doesn’t always include respect for the authority of adults or those in advanced positions. When a student attends a Shim Jang TKD class they learn lessons in respect that will stand them in good stead as they progress into adulthood.

7. Encouraging Non-Violent Conflict Resolution – Thinking that martial arts instruction promotes violent behaviour is justified if your only experience with the activity comes from television or movies. In fact, many of Shim Jang's self defence techniques teach kids peaceful, non-violent conflict resolution skills and emphasise the importance of avoiding physical altercations.

8. Improving Listening Skills – In order to master the skills they are being taught and advance through the belt ranks, students must exercise superior listening skills. Children who aren’t always adept when it comes to paying attention to what they’re told can benefit greatly from the verbal instruction and the one-on-one work practiced within a Shim Jang TKD Dojang.

9. Developing Teamwork Skills – Whether they are learning a pattern to get a new belt or sparring in a practice setting to master a new manoeuvre, there are few things that a child does in their Shim Jang classes that will be done on their own. Working together to learn new things and accomplish set goals is an important life lesson for all children to learn, it is this type of instruction that is constantly practiced within the Shim Jang TKD dojang and it will assist your child to learn that lesson.

10. Improvement in Other Areas of Life – The benefits of Shim Jang training do not end in the dojang.

The boost in confidence, increased fitness level and new cooperation skills will also help your child navigate the academic and social aspects of school, affect their behaviour at home in a positive manner and have an all-around good influence on them as they develop into an adult.

I know that I am probably preaching to the converted, but I found it very refreshing to sit back, think and understand why we take our children (and ourselves) to class and it definitely reassures me of the many benefits that are gained while practicing the art that I have regularly trained in for much of my life.

Enjoy your training.........
